Relationships between mean and standard deviation of air temperature: implications for global warming
نویسنده
چکیده
Using data from the contiguous USA, the relationship between mean and standard deviation of daily air temperature was estimated on a monthly timescale from 1948 to 1997. In general, there is either an inverse relationship or a weak relationship between mean and standard deviation. For both daily maximum and daily minimum air temperature, the inverse relationship is spatially coherent for one-third to two-thirds of the contiguous USA for most months. The inverse relationship also is fairly strong, with typical reductions in standard deviation ranging from 0.2 to 0.5°C for every 1°C increase in mean temperature. A weaker, direct relationship between mean and standard deviation occurs in some northern states, primarily during spring and fall months. Using the predominant inverse and weak relationships as historical analogs for future climatic change suggests that interdiurnal variability of air temperature should either decrease or remain unchanged under warming conditions. Although the variability of air temperature may decrease or remain unchanged at most locations in the contiguous USA, the probability of extremely high air temperatures should still increase, depending on the magnitude of changes in mean air temperature and the nature of the variance response.

In recent years, global warming and climate change have been associated with dire consequences for human societies. Changes in climate patterns can lead to severe floods, extreme heat and cold, more frequent droughts, and global warming. This increase in global warming has upset the Earthchr('39')s climate balance and caused widespread climate change in most parts of the world, known as climate...

Global warming and the meaningful relationship between temperature and precipitation changes over different areas of the earth with temperature increment of the earth, are considered as the most important patterns of this century’s climate changes. Today, there is debate over climate change and global temperatures increasing. Damaging effects of this phenomenon on the planet is one of the most ...
متن کاملRegional Contrasts of the Warming Rate over Land Significantly Depend on the Calculation Methods of Mean Air Temperature
Global analyses of surface mean air temperature (T(m)) are key datasets for climate change studies and provide fundamental evidences for global warming. However, the causes of regional contrasts in the warming rate revealed by such datasets, i.e., enhanced warming rates over the northern high latitudes and the "warming hole" over the central U.S., are still under debate. Here we show these regi...

The application of Extreme value analysis method in heat wave hazard climatology; case study in Mid-Southern Iran Abstract Greenhouse warming poses the main cause of atmospheric hazards’ exacerbation and emergence in recent years. Earth planet has been witnessing frequent and severe natural hazards from the distant past; however, global warming has strongly influenced the occurrence of some a...

Ambient air temperature prediction is of a concern in environment, industry and agriculture. The increase of average temperature results in natural disasters, higher energy consumption, damage to plants and animals and global warming. Ambient air temperature predictions are notoriously complex and stochastic models are not able to learn the non-linear relationships among the considered variable...
